New Electric Service Installation - Steamboat Springs, CO

L & M Underground was contracted to execute a precision utility bore for a new electrical service line serving a residential and agricultural property in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Facing dense siltstone geology and high-value surface structures, the team deployed trenchless horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to deliver a seamless infrastructure installation without disruption to existing property features.

The Challenge

The project required installing an electrical service line to supply a newly constructed barn. However, standard open-cut trenching presented substantial liabilities:

  • Leveraging past experience on major Routt County infrastructure projects-including the Overlook Park housing development-where L & M installed thousands of feet of power and fiber conduit for YVEA, establishing a strong local reputation and solidifying relationships with repeat electrical contractor partners.
  • Crossing an existing, concrete driveway that would require costly demolition and repaving.
  • Traversing close to a grove of mature trees, where open excavation threatened severe root damage and long-term tree mortality.
  • Navigating dense, abrasive siltstone ground conditions beneath the surface.

The Trenchless Solution

L & M Underground selected Horizontal Directional Boring (HDD) over traditional open trenching. Boring underneath the hardscape and root systems completely eliminated the need to cut the driveway and preserved the tree canopy, safeguarding the client's property aesthetics and avoiding cost and disruption restoring an open trench.

Equipment & Safety Execution

Mobilizing an experienced crew directly from Denver to Steamboat Springs, L & M Underground adhered to strict utility safety and precision drilling protocols throughout the project life cycle. With extensive experience operating across Colorado's diverse mountain ranges, L & M deploys certified, highly trained crews specialized in navigating complex ground conditions, rocky terrain, and challenging alpine environments.

  • Mobilization & Field Crew: Dispatched a specialized crew equipped with high-capacity underground tooling tailored for mountain terrain and rock formations.
  • Precision Directional Drilling: Deployed a Universal 25 boring rig, providing the requisite torque and thrust to steer through 180 feet of subterranean siltstone along the planned trajectory.
  • Underground Utility Locating: Utilized a DigiTrak F5 locator to identify, track, and map existing utility lines across the path-specifically identifying an energized secondary electric line and a primary water line running from the property's well to the main home.
  • Non-Destructive Potholing: Operated a Vermeer SFT 500 vacuum unit to perform precise, non-destructive hydro potholing. Each existing utility was visually verified for depth and alignment prior to drill head launch, ensuring complete strike prevention.

Results & Project Outcome

  • Flawless Conduit Placement: Successfully placed 180 linear feet of continuous 3" HDPE conduit from the transformer directly to the new meter setting on the barn.
  • Utility Compliant: Created an unobstructed, smooth-walled pathway ready for Yampa Valley Electric Association (YVEA) to pull electrical conductors without resistance.
  • Zero Property Damage: Preserved the integrity of the concrete driveway and surrounding tree root structures with zero surface disruption. Turnkey Delivery: Completed the project on schedule, leaving the site clean, secure, and ready for the client's electrical contractor to complete final meter installation.
